“Well, I’m real damn sorry my fuck-ups upset you.” She shook her head and sighed, gripping the steering wheel without realizing it. When he spoke up, her glare softened a little. After a moment of awkward silence, she spoke up. “You like history?”
He rolled his head to the side on the headrest to look at her. “Huh?” It took a moment for him to realize that he had spoken out loud instead of just thinking it to himself. “Yeah…yeah I like history.” He rubbed the back of his neck, rolled down the window and lit up a cigarette. He exhaled slowly and turned his gaze out the open window, hoping that she wouldn’t push it further.

He chuckled at her question and rolled his head towards her on the headrest. “We just left. Four hours remember?” He closed his eyes as the car rocked him. “If you get tired of driving, just let me know. But, we’ll be there before you know it.” He opened his eyes again and smiled at her. “Tell me another story about yourself.”
She smiled and shook her head as she drove. “Well…. there’s not much to talk about.” She remembered how he kept prying about why she wouldn’t go see her mom when she dropped out of college and considered telling him for a moment. Might as well be open about everything, right? After all, he was completely open with her. She sighed. “About my mom…. When I left for college, I actually ran away. I ran away to college because my mom didn’t want me to go. That’s why I haven’t visited her yet. She might not really want me to come back.” She kept her eyes on the road and chewed at her bottom lip.
He furrowed his brow as he listened to her. “You ran away to college? Why…why’d your mom not want you to go? That doesn’t make sense…” He watched her face, completely confused about the revelation. “So, what, you’re just gonna keep running from her for the rest of your life?”
“No.” She said, furrowing her brow and glancing at him. “She didn’t want me to go and leave her with an empty nest. And she didn’t think I was making the right choice…. I guess I just don’t want to go home and have to listen to her tell me ‘I told you so’.” She sighed and shook her head. “I’m not running from anything. I’m just trying to stay off the radar and get my life sorted out.” She was a little offended at his last comment.
“Well that’s just stupid.” He crossed his arms and turned his attention out the windshield as they neared Provo. He wasn’t sure what else to say about the situation. It just seemed so strange to him. After another long stretch of silence, he spoke out loud without realizing it. “I wanted to go to college for history.”

She giggled and kissed his cheek on the way out of the kitchen. “Ok, let me get ready and we can go. I’ll just shower tonight where we stay.” She smiled and hurried upstairs to throw some clothes on and wash up before leaving. She ran back down stairs and pulled her shoes on. “Ready?”
He stood from the kitchen table when she went upstairs and walked out onto the front porch to smoke a cigarette. He was just coming back in the front door when she came back down the stairs. “Yeah, just one second…” He took the stairs two at a time, grabbed his bag, and bounded back down the stairs. “Let’s get the hell out of this god forsaken place.”
She smiled and adjusted the strap on the bag she had packed and threw it over her shoulder. “Yeah, lets go.” She picked up her keys and gave her place a once over before shutting the door and locking up. She unlocked her car and on the walk towards it, she playfully bumped shoulders with him and giggled. “I’m excited!”
Mac was just as excited as she was, but it wasn’t in his nature to display it so overtly. “Yeah. Should be fun.” He threw his bag in the backseat, and then climbed in the front seat and found a comfortable position. He gave her directions to get out of town, and then leaned back in the seat as he settled in for the long car ride.
She threw her bag in the back with his and nodded as she pulled out of the driveway. She took the directions he had given her and wiggled in her seat, getting comfortable. After a few long minutes of silence, she started to hum quietly to herself. She glanced out her window and then unbuckled, getting uncomfortable with the seatbelt strapping her to the seat. “Are we almost there?” She hadn’t been paying attention to the clock when they left and didn’t know how much time had passed.

When Mac woke the next morning, the sun was already high in the sky. Maddie was still fast asleep in his arms, and he couldn’t see the clock over her shoulder. He yawned and shook her gently. “Maddie. Maddie we gotta get goin’ after I shower. Come on…” He sat up against the headboard and pulled her with him, trying his best to wake her.
She groaned and shook her head, wrapping an arm around him and burying her face in his chest so the sun wouldn’t violate her eyes. “Coffee.” She said flatly as she finally woke up a little. She chanced lifting her head and opening her eyes and when she saw Mac’s bed head, she giggled.
He ran a hand over his hair and took his arms from around her. “Go make your coffee. I’m taking a shower.” He threw the covers off of him and climbed out of the bed. He found his bag and rummaged through it, grabbed fresh clothes, and then excused himself to the bathroom.
She curled up into a ball for a moment, freezing her butt off after being so warm. Finally, she sighed and got up to go downstairs and make her coffee. She checked the clock on it and sighed. It was almost ten. “So much for waking up early…” she muttered. As she fixed up the coffee pot and turned it on, she leaned against the counter and pulled her hair up into a ponytail as she waited for it to be ready.
He showered quickly, dressed and got downstairs as Maddie was pouring her first cup. He fidgeted as he leaned against the wall across from her. He was excited about getting the hell out of the canyon, and was ready to go. He tried his best to keep his composure so Maddie wouldn’t feel rushed.
She smiled and blew on her warm cup of coffee before sipping on it. ‘Well, someone is excited to go.” She chuckled and sipped on her coffee again before setting her mug down and opening the cabinet behind her. “You want a cup while I get ready?”
He waved off her offer and sat down at the kitchen table. “I’m too antsy to get the hell out of this place.” He drummed his fingers on the table top, then brought his eyes to hers. He smiled sheepishly as he pulled his hands into his lap and grasped them tight. “I’m just…I’m ready when you are.” He leaned back and clasped his hands behind his head.

She raised an eyebrow and then smirked. “Was I interrupting something?” She chuckled and set his bag down for him. “Let me grab my pajamas and I’ll change in the bathroom so ya can change in here.” She went to her dresser and pulled out some old soffe shorts and an old t-shirt. “Be right back,” she said, smiling.
He took the time while she was in the bathroom to quickly remove his jeans and jump between the sheets on the bed. He rolled over on his side toward the empty side of the bed and put his hands under his head as she stepped out of the bathroom. He watched her as she turned off the light and grinned as he pulled back the covers on her side of the bed. “C’mon, princess.”
She giggled as she crawled into bed and snuggled under the covers. She got comfortable, laying on her side facing him. She kissed him softly and smiled. “I had fun tonight…. And thanks for standing up for me.” She smiled and leaned her head against his chest, sighing happily.
He pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her like he had while they were parked in the canyon. “Shhh…don’t mention it.” He smiled with his eyes shut tight. Before drifting off to sleep, he leaned down and kissed the top of her head.
She giggled and nuzzled her head up under his chin. She wrapped an arm around him and kissed his neck before closing her eyes and trying to sleep. She hadn’t set her alarm but figured if she willed herself to wake up early, they would be on the road in no time. She finally let her mind relax and drifted off to sleep.
